Hanneke Grootenboer - Painting as Denkbild: On the Embodiment of Thought

This presentation aims at (re)uniting art and philosophy by arguing that a painting can offer us a "thought" rather than a meaning or a narrative.  Such "pensive images" do not demand interpretation, but somehow force us to think.  The idea that painting is a form of thinking is not new, however, the separation of aesthetics and art history as disciplines in the 19th century has obscured the deep engagement of art with philosophy.  I would like to reveal this intimate relation by tracing the history of the notion of Denkbild  or Thought-Image.
