Forget Taste

Wednesday, 24 February 2021, 16:00-18:00 GMT

Online session

This talk is specifically about the role of taste – as it was conceived in the eighteenth century and as it continues to be conceived in some contemporary writing – in critical evaluation. I argue that it does not have a role. This talk is about taste, not about successor theories such as aesthetic experience or every pleasure theory – topics for future research.

Furthermore, in addition to challenging the taste model, I offer an alternative approach to critical evaluation, which differs from the one developed in my On Criticism and even differs from some of my recent articles, and which is based on the notion of the constitutive purpose of the artwork.
